Meet Penn Nursing Botswana 2010!

Hi I’m Grace Oppenheim and I am so excited to join my fellow peers on this extraordinary journey. I am originally from Santa Cruz, California. I attended Bryn Mawr College where I received a degree in political science. While at Bryn Mawr I was particularly interested in international politics. I spent a semester abroad at University College London. My love of international affairs has carried over into my new found passion of nursing. I am a BSN/MSN student and my specialty is Family Health NP. I decided to attend Penn’s nursing program due to the phenomenal abroad opportunities it offers. I am particularly interested in global health and am elated to have this opportunity to study how healthcare is performed in Botswana. I believe being well traveled and cultured will help me provide the best nursing care possible. In the future I hope to expand on the knowledge I gain in Botswana and couple it with my political science background to shape healthcare reform in the global context.

Meet Penn Nursing Botswana 2010!

Hi Everyone!

I’m Megan Rogers, a second-degree BSN/MSN student in the Family Health Nurse Practitioner track. I graduated last year from Vanderbilt University with a major in Psychology and a minor in Medicine, Health and Society. I plan to work as an RN between the Bachelor’s and Master’s portions of my degree, hopefully in pediatrics and/or women’s health.

I became interested in maternal and child health issues in the courses I took on medical anthropology, public health, and global health at Vanderbilt University. After a trip I took to Costa Rica to work in a pediatric primary care clinic with a few colleagues in college, I was hooked. I discovered Penn’s program while volunteering for the Global Health Council’s conference in DC a few years ago, where I met a Penn student who had participated in the pilot program in Botswana as well as some individuals from Botswana. Their stories and encouragement inspired me to apply to Penn, and I am excited to be able to experience the program first hand!

Erin is a second-degree nursing student originally from Lawrence, KS. She graduated with a background in medical anthropology from Washington University in St. Louis, and then spent several years doing social science research on young adult and adolescent reproductive health. Erin came to Penn with a strong interest in pediatrics and women's health, and is looking forward to pursuing public health and policy work after nursing school. After doing research on pregnancy sickness and infant birthweight at a hospital in rural Tanzania, she is excited to use her nursing skills in Botswana and for the opportunity to improve her assessment and clinical skills. She is grateful for the chance to travel abroad to learn about nursing in environments with few resources. Because of her interest in health and public policy, she hopes to learn more about the broader context of medical care and education in Botswana, since they have taken the initiative to provide education and health care at a national level.

I'm Linden, originally from Boston, MA, and am currently in the BSN/MSN program specializing in Psychiatry/Mental Health with a minor in Palliative Care. As a psychiatric nurse practitioner, I look forward to working in psycho-oncology helping to address the countless psychosocial components of living with cancer as well as caring for oncology patients and their families from a psychiatric perspective. My passion for the psychology behind chronic and terminal illness is what initially sparked my interest in the Botswana program. Not only do I value the opportunity for cultural exposure and look forward to incorporating my experiences and heightened cultural sensitivity back into practice when I return, but I was also drawn to Botswana as it is a place where chronic and terminal illness can be rampant. I look forward to understanding more about the cultural influences that shape people's views on health and illness in Botswana as well as providing care to populations with chronic and terminal disease.

I'm Randi D. O'Neill an undergraduate from Peotone, IL. I would like to eventually become a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. I was interested in going to Botswana to learn about healthcare in a different country but also because of my interest in the HIV/AIDS epidemic. I am excited to learn about how this country deals with their great numbers of HIV and especially the care of pediatric and adolescent HIV/AIDS patients. I feel as though the opportunity to experience global health will greatly improve my competence as a nurse and care provider.

Hello Blog World! I'm Bridget Sullivan, a BSN/MSN student in the Pediatrics Primary Care NP program.

I became interested in international health while working at Children's National Medical Center in Washington DC as an outpatient dietitian. I had a very diverse patient population and when I decided to go back to school to become an NP I knew I wanted to learn more about global health issues which is one of the reasons I chose Penn.

I'm extremely excited about the opportunity to travel to Botswana and looking forward to being able to truly immerse myself in everything the experience has to offer, particularly in the areas of pediatrics and nutrition.

Trudy Kao is currently at Penn for the Family Health NP program. She is from Irvine, California and attended the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) for her B.S. in Biochemistry & Cell Biology. During her education at UCSD, she volunteered at a free clinic in downtown San Diego as well as one in Ensenada, Mexico. With her volunteer experience and love for traveling, Trudy became interested in participating in medical trips abroad. She sees this trip as an opportunity to learn about another country's culture and healthcare system. In the future, Trudy hopes to continue making yearly medical trips abroad.

Hi, my name is Danielle Altares and I’m originally from a rural town outside of Harrisburg, PA.

I’m incredibly excited to learn about the health care system in Botswana, and to learn and grow from the people that I will get to meet while there. I look forward to visiting the pediatric clinics, and to becoming more familiar with the pediatric health care issues in Botswana.

I am pursuing an advanced practice degree in Pediatrics because I believe that is important to address the health needs of the most vulnerable among us, and children, both domestically and internationally, are disproportionately affected by inadequate access to medical care. My time working in the healthcare systems of China and Nicaragua has shaped my interest in international health work, and I want to use my nursing background to pursue policy work addressing child health in developing countries.
